Ingredients 

Dumplings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cup shortening
  • ½ cup milk
  • 4 apples, peeled and cored

Sauce

  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk just until moistened.
  3. Roll dough into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 4 squares. Place an apple on each square and fold dough over the apple, pinching edges to seal.
  4. Place dumplings in a baking dish.
  5. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour sauce over dumplings.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until apples are tender and dough is golden brown.
