Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add warm water, mixing until the dough comes together.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.
Roll out the dough to ⅛ inch thickness and cut into 3-inch squares.
Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
Fry the dough squares in batches until golden brown and puffed, about 2 minutes per side.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Serve warm with honey or powdered sugar.
