Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • as needed oil for frying
  • as needed honey or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions 

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add warm water, mixing until the dough comes together.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  5. Roll out the dough to ⅛ inch thickness and cut into 3-inch squares.
  6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Fry the dough squares in batches until golden brown and puffed, about 2 minutes per side.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve warm with honey or powdered sugar.
